We know that Mexico is a country like no other, that within the huge variety of countries and cultures on Earth, Mexico is a special place with an extraordinary diversity of natural and cultural sceneries and that its people is the cherry on top of those wonders. So it’s no surprise that Mexico has such a unique tradition to offer the world like Día de Muertos, the Day of the Dead, a celebration that may even look odd in other parts of the world and be misunderstood, but once that you dive into it, you realize just how beautiful essence it has and what a deep meaning lies behind. Let’s get to know now a little background of this magnificent day dedicated to death.
This is a celebration originated in Mexico but that it has inspired other countries in Latin America to follow their steps and it’s been inscribed in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by Unesco.
Its origin goes back to the Teotihucan culture in Mexico, where they practiced intense rituals with the purpose of letting the deceased go in peace to one of their four paradises, accompanied by their favorite food, knives, jade stones and seeds and guided by a xoloescuintle dog so they can help them be the light in the path to the underworld.
Now the tradition is very attached to this origin, adding important contributions like the literary calaveras, the catrina litographies created by José Guadalupe Posada in the early XX century in the city of Aguascalientes, the sugar skulls, the dead bread and the crowded parades all over the country.
If you want to fully live the Day of the Dead in Puerto Vallarta, we recommend you to stay close to the 5 de diciembre, Centro and Zona Romántica neighborhoods, these are the areas where the folklore, the culture and the people gather. Our recommendations for hotels in the area are the hotel Rosita, a Vallarta classic; the Hacienda Buenaventura, an extraordinary family hotel or the Las Palmas by the Sea hotel, a place for adventure that offers parasailing, boogie board and boat tours.
